Mono Lake

Mono Lake is one of the neatest places to visit!

In 1941, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power began diverting Mono Lake's tributary streams 350 miles south to meet the growing water demands of Los Angeles.

Deprived of its freshwater sources, the volume of Mono Lake halved, while its salinity doubled. Unable to adapt to these changing conditions within such a short period of time, the ecosystem began to collapse.

Thanks to the Mono Lake Committee and the copious amounts of rainfall during the winter of 2016/2017, the lake is making a comeback. The lake supports the local and migratory wildlife making this a popular place for birdwatchers.

Tufa Towers

On the south end of the lake are the beautiful tufa towers and Navy Beach.

You can take a self-guided tour of these amazing wonders! Tufa towers are calcium-carbonate spires and knobs formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water.
