I have the best husband in the world. Last year we had stopped at Bonneville Salt Flats in the hopes I would be able to photograph the salt patterns. Well, who would have thought that they were going to have a banner year for rainfall> No salt patterns to be had! So this year, on our trip through Idaho, we decided to make a detour and hit the Bonneville Salt Flats on our way home. Ok, Ok, so we may have driven a little bit out of our way to visit the flats!
First stop was at the end of the official road to check it out. It looked very different than it did last year! Last year there was water as far as the eye could see!

We had remembered that we could camp on the north end of the salt flats. That was perfect. I also wanted to get some light trail shots while there. We got there later in the afternoon and set up camp, checked the sunset time and got camera equipment ready.
I'm not sure how many people know this but the best place to check out the salt flats is at the west bound rest area just east of Wendover, Utah. We headed that way and as luck would have it, there were my salt patterns! Of course, everyone and their brother was there as well! Mike, Niki and I headed out across the flats to try and find a place to capture some sunset shots.

The above scene was completely different than that of last year!

After getting a few sunset shots we headed back to camp. We were way out in the boondocks so I felt relatively safe leaving my camera outside at night to do my star trail shots. Well, imagine my surprise when I got up in the morning to fetch my camera and I saw that someone had driven right past us!

The one thing about this time of the year is you don't have to get up at the butt crack of dawn to get a sunrise photograph. It's darn near 8 am before you get any color! The sunrise that morning was epic.

I highly recommend visiting this place. It is pretty neat. What is super cool is you are right on the Nevada/Utah border so you can visit the casinos! I might like to play the slots a little bit!

Easiest place in the world to find! I-80 just east of the Nevada border!
